Dario Cagno

Italian anarchist and anti-fascist. He was among the first organisers of the Resistance in Turin.

Of modest origin at 14 years old he embarks as a baker on a merchant ship and travels between Europe and the United States. During the First World War he was repatriated, between 1918 and 1919 he was convicted of crimes against property and for desertion. After atoning for his sentence he works at Fiat in Turin, but is soon fired for the rebellious and insuffering character of every discipline. He emigrated to France where he enlisted in the foreign Legion he abandoned after a short time.

In 1925 he came into contact with representatives of anti-fascist spills such as Sandro Pertini and Alceste de Ambris and became a clandestine courier to keep in touch between the spills and the militants who remained active in Italy. He continued this activity until 1932 when he was stopped in Ventimiglia because he had no passport. Since the police ignore his clandestine activity, he is sentenced to a slight sentence, which he tries again, several times and without success, the clandestine expatriation until he can bring himself back to France. At this point, in 1934, he was sentenced to three years of confinement and sent to Ponza, where he highlighted himself for the rebellious character and participation in collective protests. for his behaviour he suffered convictions and an extension of another five years of the period of confinement. After a period spent in Pantelleria in 1942 he was amnestied for the 20th anniversary of the Fascist Revolution. Return to Turin. Here, after September 8, 1943, he is among the first organisers of the Resistance. It is the first GAP of the city: On the morning of October 25, together with the communist Atheus Garemi justice in the center the major of the militia Domenico Giardina. The two are arrested two days later following a delusion and, after a summary trial before the Turin section of the Special Court, sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out at dawn on 22 December 1943 by firing squad.
