Helmut Klose

An activist for the anarcho-syndicalist organization FAUD, Helmut Klose had played a role in Gregor Gog's film Vagabund and Fritz Weiss (1930). He was a member of the Bruderschaft der Vagabunden. He had taken refuge in Czechoslovakia in 1933 after the Nazis took power. Following his activism in favour of Spain, he was expelled and then won Catalonia. In early 1937, he was a militiaman in the battalion of the coast (Centuria Sébastien Faure de la Colonne Durruti) on the Franco-Spanish border. He was also involved in the work of the agricultural community of San Andres. On July 2, 1937, while participating in the organization of a collectivity of tailors, he was arrested by the communists and imprisoned in the Modelo. Passed in France during the Retirada, he was interned at the camp of Gurs, then with the help of a German friend managed to reach England and settle in Cambridge. During the Second World War, he was interned as a German citizen in a camp on the Isle of Man and then in Canada. After the war he worked in a laboratory in Cambridge.

Helmut Klose died in 1987 and his archives were deposited at the Institute of Social History in Amsterdam
