Hipólito Marivela Torres

Castillian carpenter, anarcho-syndicalist and fighter with the Durruti Column, born. He was still very young when he joined the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo and was one of the organisers of the Sindicato de Oficios Varios (Union of Diverse Trades). In 1936 , following the fascist uprising, left the first on the front enlisted as a volunteer in the Durruti Column, fighting in Madrid, Aragon and, later, in Catalonia. With Franco's victory in February 1939, he crossed the Pyrenees for Puigcerdà and was interned in the Mont-Louis and Vernet concentration camps, later joining the Compagnies de Travailleurs Étrangers (Foreign Workers Company). With the German occupation, he fought in the Résistance but was arrested by the Nazis and sent on March 3, 1941, with the registration number 3525 to Mauthausen concentration camp, where he remained until the liberation of the camp on May 5 1945. After World War II, he worked in the mines of the Grand Comba, becoming active in the CNT in Champclausson and Trescolí, where he actively campaigned in the CNT and occupied various official positions. In 1979 he attended the Fifth Congress of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo [Dec. 8-16] at the Casa de Campo in Madrid as a delegate of centistas in exile in France.

Hipólito Marivela Torres died in hospital in Montpellier on August 31, 1980, following a long illness and was buried the following day in La Grand-Combe cemetery.
