Andrés Llaneza Rozada

Born in El Corral de Bayuetu (now Vero, San Martín del Rey Aurelio).

His father was Alfredo Llaneza (El Gitano), a socialist miner who was murdered on November 4, 1938, by the counterinsurgency operating in the Asturian mountains of Santa Bárbara; his mother was named María Rozada, and he had four siblings (Manuel, Ovidio, Mario, and Clementina). Very fond of poetry, he earned a living as a miner and lived in Collado Escobal (Asturias).

On June 27, 1945, while serving in the military as a corporal in the No. 26 Artillery Regiment stationed in Valladolid (Castile, Spain), and having been arrested on June 6, 1945, for insulting the «Caudillo», he escaped from the dungeons of the No. 3 Milán Infantry Regiment in Oviedo (Asturias) and joined the anti-Franco guerrilla group of the Agrupación Guerrillera de Asturias, which operated in the mountains and the mining basin.

Following the annihilation of the group in 1947, he formed his own group, into which his brother Mario Llaneza Rozada (El Gitano), Aladino Suárez González (Aladino), Ignacio Alonso Fernández (Raxáu), and Juan Magdalena Suárez (Canales) were integrated.

Wounded in a clash, he was treated in a hospital in León and stayed in the area for a while. Active in the Asturian areas of Pola de Laviana and Infiesto, he had his main operational base in the Asturian sierra of Grandasllamas and maintained contacts with comrades in central León province.

He organized the group into three units commanded respectively by Juan Magdalena Suárez (Canales), Bartolomé López Medina (Pedro el Andaluz), and Joaquín González Muñiz (Tranquilo).

On January 24, 1949, he managed to escape following a clash with the Civil Guard in Horizon (Nava), where the communist guerrilla fighter Aladino Suárez (Aladino) and Eduardo Osorio fell.

That same year, he carried out numerous sabotage operations on high-voltage lines, especially in La Huerta, as well as ambushes in La Brañueta, Canzada, and Las Quintanas, and several actions in the Sotondrio area.

During the summer of 1950, he attended the burial of guerrilla fighter Adolfo Quintana, held in the Santullano cemetery (Asturias). Andrés Llaneza Rozada was killed, along with the communist guerrilla fighter Fernando Álvarez Iglesias (El Alcalde), on July 30, 1952, after being located by two dozen civil guards, led by Sergeant Modesto García Fernández and Corporal Valeriano Varela Fernández, in a cabin in La Vallilfresnu, near Campa la Muezca (San Martín del Rey Aurelio); his body was thrown into a common grave in Santa Bárbara (Asturias, Spain).
