Exiled in France during the Retirada in February 1939, Esteban Navarrete Berbel was at the liberation member of the local Carmaux Federation of the CNT in exile. In December 1945, he was the delegate of this FL (70 members) to the plenary assembly of the regional No. 2, held in Toulouse and where he refused to vote the motion condemning the so-called collaborationist tendency.

In 1947, he was reportedly arrested and imprisoned following a robbery case.

Esteban Navarrete Berbel died on 29 December 2002 in Dieulouard (Meurthe-et-Moselle).

His partner Suzanne died on March 12, 2020.
